Bocholt is found just south of the border with the Netherlands, in the north-west of North Rhine-Westphalia. Originally a manufacturing town, many specialized manufacturers have their plants there. Bocholt suffered heavily in World War, but has undergone something of a facelift since then.
Ideal for exploring on foot, in the town centre visitors can take a look at the Town Hall, a charming Renaissance style building. Nearby, you will also find the main shopping district and a variety of restaurants and bars. The Gothic style George Church is also another highlight. The renowned goldsmith and engraver Israhel van Meckenem was born here, and tourists can see his birthplace.
Another way to explore the town is by bike, and Bocholt offers easy cycle hire; indeed, the German word for bicycle – ‘Fahrad’ – was coined by a Bocholter, Otto Sarrazin. Altogether, there are over two hundred kilometres of cycle pathways from which you can see beautiful views of the surrounding natural landscape. This includes the Stadtwald, or City Woods, which are home to many wild animals. For aqua lovers, there is also the River Aa, the Aa Sea and Lower Rhine close by. |
