An excellent place to drive, Bottrop has the longest stretch of autobahn without junctions; as such, it is often used for testing vehicles at high speed. Situated in the West of central Germany the town is attached to Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck and Dorsten. With a strong coal mining heritage, many factories still have their plants here including the famous Mercedes-Benz tuning company Brabus.
Highlights for visitors around the city include the Quadrat Museum, which is home to many impressive exhibitions, and the City Hall. For sports enthusiasts, the Alpincentre – the world’s longest indoor ski slope – is sure to hit the right notes. Be sure to look at the Schloss Beck theme park and castle, too.
There are many carnivals and markets in Bottrop’s social calendar; a particular highlight is the Christmas Market and the Michael’s Market. These are usually to be found in the centre of the town, in which visitors can also find several boutiques and shops. |
