Primarily a trading mecca, Bremerhaven suffered heavily during World War Two but is particularly interesting for its Maritime History. This is due to its significant role as a Naval Base for the German Navy; indeed, today it is still an important trading port.
Its situation makes having a car a must, and it is accessible along the Autobahn A27. The North Sea views are a highlight; visitors can also check the Zoo which is close to the port and home to some great examples of the life aquatic. The German Maritime Museum showcases exhibitions about Bremerhaven’s importance as a trading port and centre, and is well worth looking at. Each year, there are many sailing events that take place, particularly in the summer.
Sports enthusiasts can take the opportunity to watch the Fischtown Penguins, who are famous around Germany and are one of the best placed teams in the country’s ice hockey league. After a day of sightseeing, sample some of the local seafood at one of the many local fish-friendly restaurants clustered around the Fischbahnhof area ; one particular recommendation is Fischereihafen-Restaurant Natusch, with its cosy ambience and nautical theme. |
