Near to Hesse, Butzbach is twinned with Eilenburg and is known as the ‘Pearl of Wetterau’. An ancient stopping place along the Roman road between Weser and Elbe, its well-designed roads make it ideal for touring by car. The Roman influence can still be felt in the historic city centre; the Romans built many walls, towers and moats to fortify it during their occupation. Indeed, the Butzbach Museum has a replica fort as one of its exhibits. After the Germans took the town back, Butzbach became best known in the medieval period for its cloth and atelier production.
Because of its location near to the Hochtaunus hills and Hoch Wiesel Mountain, hikers can follow many pleasant walking trails, including the Hessentag Trail and the Waldlehr Trail.
Cabaret has a long history in Butzbach, and as a City of Culture, it is sure to have something to entertain you. The Butzbach Cinema also regularly puts on open-air cinema performances; great for unwinding after hitting the trails. |
