Coburg has played a disproportionately significant role in Germany history, given the size of the town. Easily accessible by car from larger cities and towns such as Nuremberg, it is a much recommended place to spend a few days.
An important settlement from the eleventh century, it was regularly used as a residence from the Saxony-Coburg and Gotha Dukedom. This tie with nobility has created a unique town with some truly exceptional examples of architecture; towers weave beside alleys and churches. Martin Luther spent six months in the city after having received his banishment order. Tourists can visit the museum which holds some of the letters that he wrote during his visit. The St. Moritz Church is a highlight; visitors can see where he worshipped and preached. Another very important part of German culture was also invented here; the famous Frankfurter sausage. They city also plays host to many cultural and arts events, including the widely known German Samba festival. |
