Darmstadt is easily accessible from the Autobahn and home to a wealth of artistic and cultural points of interest. After the Second World War, Darmstadt was badly affected but has undergone something of a makeover since then. Its regeneration has led to the establishment of many significant cultural institutions in the small town. This includes the artists’ colony, the Mathildenhöhe, the Exhibition Building, Wedding Tower and the Art Nouveau period building.
Still supportive of various artistic projects, Darmstadt proves to be fruitful for creation. A cosmopolitan city, it is internationally revered for its State Theatre, colourful jazz life, cabaret and theatre scenes. There are also many well-preserved historical landmarks. The Darmstadt Palace, City Hall and Church of St. Louis are all particularly significant landmarks. A recommended tour is to walk down Magdalene Street and check out the monuments dotted around, before pausing for a cappuccino at Lower Rhine Street, where you can admire some of the post-1950s architecture. |
