Detmold has a fortunate situation in that it is surrounded by hills and valleys, whilst retaining the appeal of a town. Close to the Teutoburg forest, there are opportunities for almost 230 kilometres of cycle paths for bike enthusiasts as well as hikers to explore. The many museums and art galleries on offer in the town centre have often led to it being referred to as the ‘Cultural Centre by the Teutenburg’ Forest.
At Detmold’s centre, the old town is home to over five hundred historical monuments and artifacts which have gathered since the town was founded in 1260. Guided tours are offered in order that visitors can appreciate some of the highlights; the Werre River lies close by, lending a charmingly picturesque take to the town itself. For nature lovers, another additional point of interest is the bird sanctuary which is located close to one of the several idyllic ponds that scatter Detmold. Fishing is also a favourite pass-time for locals. Be sure to take advantage of the Wurstebrei, Puttappel and Lippischer liver sausage to tickle your tastebuds. |
