Dueren dates back to the eighth century and retains this ancient charm with all the offerings of a modern town. Very close to neighbouring cities including Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen and Maastricht, Dueren is home to some significant cultural and historical landmarks and churches including the Dicker Turm - a remaining part of the city wall - and also the Grönjansturm, which is another adjacent part of the wall. The Pleußmühle is another fine example of historical architecture; previously a mill, it is an impressive building and still has its water wheel.
Since 1991, Dueren has become particularly well known for its Jazz Festival Theatre. However, the many other options for entertainment and leisure include shooting, fairs, carnivals, autumn and Christmas markets and art exhibitions. For a change of scenery, the many lakes surrounding the town are another, more natural diversion. For an escape from the town, it is worth touring to the Ruraue Lake, which is home to many meadows, pastures and grasslands; a family-friendly day out |
