Erfurt is in the centre of Germany and, as such, is a great stopping point for any car tour particularly as it also boasts excellent internal traffic connections. Dating back to the eighth century, the town was traditionally one of the most important areas for medieval trade and also has a well-renowned university. Visitors to the city have included Luther, Goethe, Schiller and Napoleon, as well as J.S. Bach. Indeed, the beautiful Merchants’ Church is where J.S. Bach’s parents were married.
The horticulture in Erfurt is particularly admired; Goethe himself wrote about the poppy gardens in the town. One can relax in some of the many gardens the city is home to, and also see some of the old horticultural shops selling their flower-related products. Throughout the city there are many carefully restored Renaissance buildings which offer a glimpse of this heritage. Visitors can also enjoy the city's renowned hospitality and hearty fare: the famous Thuringian dumplings, bratwurst and local beer. Additionally, the medieval centre of the town is a great place to absorb the Christmas time, with many local craftsmen selling their products, often including wood carvings and candles. |
