Located in Bavaria, Erlangen is home to many festivals throughout the year which makes it a great place to visit during any point of the calendar although it comes particularly recommended during the summer and early autumn months. Dating from the eleventh century, the town is perhaps most famous for the Bergkirchweih beer festival within Germany.
The local University, with its magnificent main building in the old Castle, is also another must-see on any trip to Erlangen. No trip to Erlangen would be complete without a trip to one of the local breweries; the Bierkeller is a particular recommendation for Franconian and Swiss beers alike. For gourmands, there are several wine shops offering tastings and accessories. There is also an active nightlife scene, with several bars and clubs for an alternative diversion (perhaps after beer sampling). There are also ample shopping amenities, galleries and museums should you be of a less beer-orientated bent! |
