Essen combines the most exciting elements of a modern metropolis with a unique selection of daring architecture. Close to the River Ruhr, it is accessible via the A40 by car. There are many attractions throughout the city; one main feature for any visit is the Alte Synagogue which is a place of rememberance for the victims of World War Two and also houses a museum.
Essen has a long tradition of cultivating art, and there are many museums and galleries here. The Folkwang Museum is characterized by many graphics, painting and sculptures from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Zollverein Colliery is listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site and is another main attraction.
For shopping, the central shopping arena is the Limbecker Platz which houses many international store outlets as well as local shops. The well-maintained road network also means that Essen is ideal for navigating by car, and there is ample parking conveniently positioned throughout the city |
