Gera is a magnificent city that is best known as the birthplace and home of the world famous painter and graphic artist Otto Dix; as such, the city is still steeped in his influence. Unsurprisingly, many of the tourists exhibitions are centred on Otto Dix. Visitors may tour the Otto-Dix-House and the Museum of Applied Arts also comes highly recommended.
Aside from the Dix influence, the town has many other interesting visiting points for tourists. These include the spectacular villas and markets on the ‘Cultural Mile’. The Gera Museum and Museum of Natural History have exhibitions which cover the history of the area and region, although they are currently under renovation. Check out the weekly Farmers’ Markets, which occur in the town square for your fix of fresh local produce. The Christmas markets are also some of the best in the region; perfect for your wintery fix of glühwein and bratwurst. |
