Giessen in the Hesse region is home to a rich cultural heritage, and has been associated with major liberal movements of twentieth century Germany. Very close to Frankfurt and two major rivers, including the Lahn, Giessen enjoys the advantages of this position and there are many natural pursuits that can be followed in this area.
Giessen’s turbulent history is evident in the architecture around the town; the university buildings and outhouses are some of the highlights. The world famous Justus von Liebig museum is widely acclaimed and houses rich collections of historical and archaeological artefact. The Oberhessiche Museum similarly houses collections of art and historical shows. The Kunsthalle is also a recommended visit for tourists, and regularly shows musical and dramatic shows which give a flavour of Giessen’s unique culture. The Old Cemetery is another highlight.
Because of its rich botanical history, Giessen’s botanical gardens are some of the most spectacular in the region. The Liebig Museum, which honours the famous chemist Justus von Liebig’s with some of its long-running exhibitions, is another recommendation. |
