Located in Thuringia, Gotha is a residential city and the former capital of the Dukedom Saxe-Coburg. The Friedenstein Castle is the central point of the city and is in the Baroque style that characterizes much of the scenery in the surrounding areas. Additionally, the Orangery, the Friedenstein Castle, the Ducal Museum and the Museum of Nature are some of the most interesting places for tourists and visitors. There are many performances throughout the year, with May being a particular highlight for the Festival goers in town; early autumn is also notable for its Jazz and Literary Festivals. Additionally, the Theatre shows many performances and creative works, year-round.
The Old Town Hallin the old town is surrounded by medieval ramparts and beautifully restored buildings including St. Paul’s Church, which is one of the most impressive structures and essential sees for any visitor; these were built prior to some of the most impressive urban developments in the region. One of the most famous incidents to have occurred in the city was the dismissal of the Goettingen Seven; professors who were dismissed and then expelled from the country. |
