Gruenstadt is regarded as a ‘Green City’ and is a particular favourite for wine lovers, given its situation close to vineyards in the Assel Heimer Goldberg. The suburbs of the Asselheim and Sausenheim, populated with old town houses and pretty streets, means that the town is ideal for exploration on foot but there are also many opportunities for parking. Walking and hiking around Gruenstadt are particularly popular, and the German Wine walking route leads over the Asselheim and to the south; after which you can sample some of the local fare at one of the many wine bars in the area. Another recommended walking trail is the Eckbach Mill Trail which leads past thirty five mills and gives a flavour of the history of the area still further.
The Castle, which was built in the thirteenth century, is particularly popular for tourists and the trail from it leads to Battenburg via scenic forests. The Burgtheatre is also home to an attractive outdoor swimming pool which is great for those with families. |
