Guenzburg is a city of significant local importance and a cultural hub in Germany. With its roots in the Roman ages, it is close to the Danube river and has historically been an intersection point for trade. The archaeological finds along the river make it one of the most interesting parts of the whole of Germany. It is ideal for exploring in a car, and there are convenient spaces for parking in the city centre.
The writer Alexander Heilmeyer is one of Guenzburg’s most famous exports, and the city pays homage to him in the local museum. Under the rule of the Habsburgs, the city rose to prominence as a trading centre still further; it rapidly developed in the fifteenth century and between 1577 and 1580 an increasing amount of Renaissance architecture was built. Postwar, Guenzburg has developed into a thriving metropolis and the City Hall, and the Forum am Hofgarten are just some of the important local centre. The Old Town is great for exploring on foot and gives over to adjoining market streets which are also home to regular outdoor markets. The city also has one of the largest LEGO parks in the world – perfect for kids! |
