Hamm is located in Northern Westphalia and easily accessible by car from the Autobahn along the A1 and A2 routes. Whilst damaged significantly during the Second World War, the town maintains some of the buildings from the eighteenth century which are great starting points for visitors embarking on a tour of the area. Two Baroque town houses are in the centre of the town and the oval layout is inviting for visitors to explore either by foot or in a car.
It is a great place for walkers and cyclists, too; from the top of the hills you can view castles with surrounding moats, as well as the famous landmark of Hamm – the 35 metre high glass elephant that is the symbol of the city and was designed by the artist and architect Horst Rellecke. The Gustav-Lubcke museum is an interesting visit and shows the history of the town very effectively. You can also check out the adventure spa, ‘Maximare’, which lies close to the canal and the Maximilian Park. |
