Located on the southeast of Germany, Passau borders Austria and as such is a clash of cultures that will keep visitors entertained. The location is also home to the mouth of three rivers – the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz Passau. This lends it some spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, and also provides for the name it had in ancient times; ‘The City of Three Rivers’. Passau’s history dates back to the Neolithic period, but it bears the marks of romantic and baroque periods in its architecture.
Visitors can also take in the old Cathedral of St. Stephen, the Fortress and the Maria Hilf Monastery. From the picturesque town square, visitors can tour up the winding streets and promenades. Particularly impressive, the Catheral of St. Stephen is a highlight and is home to one of the largest organs in the world. The Prince Bishop’s Opera House offers an exciting and sophisticated programme, including regular jazz, blues, literary readings and art shows. |
