Schweinfurt is easily accessible from the city of Mainz and has over a thousand years of history, which is demonstrated by some of the buildings dotted around the town. Although in the last fifty years the city has concentrated itself primarily on industrial pursuits, there are also many attractions for visitors. The Altes Gymnasium on the Luther Platz is one of the most important structures of the German Renaissance and was built in the sixteenth century. The Bausch Tower is also a high spot for visitors. Originally built in the seventeenth century, it was severely damaged during the Second World War but was restored during the nineteen fifteen and is now home to the Academy of Sciences which uses the tower as an observatory.
Other important points of interest include the Market Square District, which is close to some of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in the whole of Schweinfurt, and the impressive City Library. The Kunsthalle Baths are also well worth visiting. It is also highly recommended that tourists make time to enjoy the traditional Franconian cuisine on offer. |
