The historical town of Trier is home to a long heritage which today combines with all the amenities of a modern city, with many trendy cafes and wine bars dotted around for respite from viewing the tourist attractions. The Porta Nigra Gate in the town is the largest north of the Alps, and there are many other excellent examples of Roman architecture including the amphitheatre and Karl Marx House. Regarded as Germany’s sparkling wine capital, visitors are able to sample the local brews in some of the many vineyards located close to the town centre and around the Moselle River.
The river itself is also ideal for a romantic day trip; leading up to the city, tourists can take in St. Mary’s Column, which is one of the main landmarks of Trier and one of the most interesting tourist attractions. Trier is also well connected from Cologne, Saarbrucken and Luxembourg along the A1, the A8 and the A 64. |
