Located close to the mouth of the Mandau river and the borders of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, Zittau is home to a clash of cultures as well as being surrounded by some spectacular landscape including the Zittau mountains. Given its location, Zittau regards itself as a link between borders in Europe and as a ‘city in the triangle’ it is host to several cultural influences.
The administrative, educational and cultural centre of the district of Gorlitz, Zittau’s International Graduate School spills over into the multicultural flavour that is felt throughout the city. Indeed, there are many different kinds of restaurants and cuisine on offer. The Baroque fountains, city museum and former Franciscan monastery are highlights. Additionally, the surrounding area’s heavy soils are home to some of the most important gardening industries in Germany. The entire surrounding area of the Oberlausitzer is one of the most impressive sceneries in the whole of Germany. |
