Located in the popular living and travelling area of Crete, Heraklion is a charming, walled city with an almost ‘Venetian’ style. From the downtown monuments such as the Loggia, which is where the Duke and other officials of Greece traditionally gathered, to the so-called ‘Lion’s Square’ which is home to a charming Lion fountain, it’s easy to see why Heraklion is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the whole of Greece.
Recommended attractions include the Archaeological Museum of Crete, which is situated in the northeast corner of Liberty Square and also the Historical Museum which houses many of the impressive artefacts from Christian and Byzantine through to modern times. Ergamos is an excellent restaurant located on Georgiadi 5 Oasi, and comes particularly recommended. Heraklion is not far from Chania, and it takes approximately two hours to drive between the two. Summer is the ideal time to visit, as the council programmes a variety of artistic events as part of its Heraklion Summer programme |
