Located in North-Western Greece, Ioannina is home to a beautiful scenic landscape given its situation on the bank of Lake Pamvotis, which is 500m above altitude. Although a small city, its innate character and charm are clear to see from driving around.
For sightseeing, visitors can start with the impressive Pavlos Vrellis Museum, which contains some wax effigies, and also the Castle of Ioannina, which is one of the oldest castles in Greece. Also interesting to visit are the Mosques – a stark reminder of the history of the area. There are some particularly good restaurants in Ioannina – from taverns to raki places. Frogs legs, eels and trout are particularly common here – and unusual tastes for visitors. Extreme sports are also popular in Ioannina; visitors can try climbing as well as parapent diving during their time here. To get to there, it is approximately 450km from Athens via Patras and 200km from Thessaloniki. |
