A great example of Greece’s impressive history, Kavala is a stunning city with a quaint harbour feel. It comprises spacious contemporary architecture with some remnants of the ancient city of Necropolis – an unusual mix. You can drive to Thessaloniki from Kavala and vice versa, a distance of approximately 150km. Some of the impressive landmarks include the Byzantine Castle and Kamares – which show the Turkish influence in the city to a tee.
Hiring a car in the area is especially helpful as it will allow you to explore the other mainland areas including the monastery, Palia Kavala, as well as the ancient ruins of town such as Filipi, the ancient Macedonian city and the Spas. Additionally, Icosifinissa is a Byzantine monastery about 45 km away on Mount Paggaio (Pangeon) near Nikisiani village. With one hundred and fifty cells and broad, open courtyards, it is a fascinating place to visit and was built in the fourth century. |
