Capital of the region of Thessaly and located in central Greece, Larissa is a beautiful part of Greece and has a long history going back thousands of years. Mount Olympus, close to Larissa and one of the most famous mountains in the world, is ripe for reaching by car, as are the many villages located close by. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, died here. Aside from this claim to fame, Larissa has also played home to several Masters in the art world, including Henry Matisse and Renoir.
This area is particularly popular for trekking and alternative activities. The lovely, offbeat village of Ambelakia can also be visited by car, as can Elassona. Hiring a car will make it easy to check out some of the beaches around the town, including Agiokampos – another particularly popular place for sun worshippers. A vibrant festival spirit means that there are several carnivals held in Larissa town throughout the year – of which the Ampelona wine festival is a particular highlight. |
