Located in the south of Italy, Benevento was traditionally a playground for the Italian aristocracy and this makes it a welcoming alternative retreat from some of the more famous Italian holiday destinations. The Ponte Leproso – or Lepers’ Bridge – is a particularly fascinating indicator of Benevento’s tumultuous history. The many churches that dot the town, such as the Santa Trinita and the Cathedral, are examples of Italian architecture at its finest. Benevento has also enjoyed strong links with the British since Edward Hutton visited it.
Food in Benevento is a particular highlight, and you can enjoy some samples of Italian classics at the many bistros, restaurants and trattorias dotting the town with one recommended stop being the Stardust Restaurant on the Via A. Meomartini. Benevento is well connected by road networks, including the SS7 Appia State Road from Naples and so is easily reached by car. Its close proximity to Bari makes it ideal for a day-trip from there |
