Traditionally regarded as one of the best port towns close to Rome, Civitavecchia is ideal for a day trip from its bigger brother. A picturesque town, it is within easy driving access of the Fiumicino Airport, which is only fifty kilometres away. As it is often the first port of call for visitors to Italy, and one of the best-known places to get a ferry to Barcelona and Sardinia, there are some interesting attractions in the town centre and it is well worth spending at least a day here. One of the most impressive sites is the Forte Michelangelo, which was built in the fifteenth century.
Aside from the impressive sea walks, the food in Civitavecchia is particularly recommended; as a port town, the seafood is excellent. Highlight restaurants include the Bounty, which is on the Lungoporto Gramsci, and La Fana which is on Via Traiana. There are many other attractions that are generally appealing for those with families, such as the Aquafelix Waterpark. |
