Situated on the Italian-Swiss border, the 30-mile-long lake in Lombardy has regularly attracted aristocrats from days of yore (or, indeed, days when the word ‘yore’ was still in use). Its shores have been residence to many illustrious historical figures, including writers such as Manzoni and Stendhal, as well as composers Bellini and Liszt, and painter Corot. The appeal continues until now; celebrities who own property around the Lake include Paul McCartney, Daniel Craig, Sting and Madonna.
Visitors and residents are spoiled with an abundance of recreational water sports including kite surfing and fishing. Opportunities abound for romance, with beautiful scenic walks and even day-trips to Isola Comacina, the only island on the lake, on offer. The Locanda restaurant is said to be a must for any star spotter and has served the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Sylvester Stallone and Elton John flambéed coffees for dessert. Traditional fine dining options are largely fish-based, including dishes such as the “missaltino”. A few kilometres away from medieval Como city, historical villas dot the lake and directly overlook its waters. |
