Messina was historically a trading city and one of the most integral cogs in the wheel of Italian industry for decades. A stunning and vibrant sea town, it is within easy access of Sicily and it is worth spending several days exploring the town and surrounding areas. The views of the seafront are particularly impressive; for dining, the Gaviotti area is particularly highly recommended for its seafood. Dishes on your priority list should include sampling Rustici, which are fried or over-cooked rice balls, as well as the other varieties of Italian pasta and other types of food that count will tempt you.
From the magnificent Piazza Duomo, or town square, visitors can take in the charming small streets and start a day of exploration on foot. The Orion Fountain, which was built in the sixteenth century by Montorsovi – a long time collaborator of Michaelangelo. To reach Messina, drivers can take the A20 and E40 roads. |
