Close to Tuscany, Prato is a charming example of Tuscan history and culture. It is within easy access of Lake Como and there are two residential villages along the way. It was historically very important for trading, and served as a centre for wider parts of Italy. You can reach Prato from the SP126 and A11 from Firenze by car, and also easily from the larger town of Lucca.
Sights of interest include the Conservatory and monastery of San Niccolo, the Prato Cathedral and the City Walls. Additionally, the Palace Darini is particularly breath-taking. Some of the best things in Prato are food-orientated; visitors can try the wonderful Sassi Calvana cookies. During September time, Prato really comes to life. An international market offers up a variety of goodies, from clothes to ethnic jewellery to unusual cuisine. A great example of Tuscan culture at its small-town best. |
