Sassari is in the north west of Sardinia, and is the second largest city in the province. An interesting introduction to Sardinian culture, it has been something of a cultural melting pot for Italian artists in the twentieth century; names including Adolfo Orru were born and raised in Sassari. Its literary heritage is also particularly impressive. The Old Quarter of the town is one of the best areas to view on foot and one recommendation during the day is to have a coffee at the Plaza Italia beside the statue of King Vittorio Emmanuele on a Sunday morning.
During August is one of the best times to visit Sassari, as this is when the Candle Festival takes place – starting at the Church of Rosary, a procession continues through the town to the Santa Maria Bethlehem Church. This can draw crowds of up to ten thousand people, and is a great example of Italian celebratory spirit at its best. Sassari is three hours from the city of Cagliari, and so is well placed for exploring Sardinia |
