Situated in Northern Italy, Trieste is close to the border with Slovenia which provides it with a particularly idiosyncratic architectural style and culture. With both influences from the Slav and German cultures clashing together with Italian, there is a mix of languages – as well as a particularly free-spirited attitude – that makes Trieste famous amongst Italians. It remains famous amongst the Brits for being literary figure James Joyce’s home for several years.
The perfect approach to Trieste is along the coastal road, as it provides you with a view of the Capitol Hill, San Giusto Castle and Roman Theatre. It can also be reached along the A4 road from Venice to Trieste. The town centre is comprised of beautifully designed neo-classical buildings. Some of the tourist attractions include the Museo di Historia Naturale and the Roman Theatre. The food in Trieste is another highlight of any visit here – you can literally taste the Austrian influence in the cuisine, from the Krapfen to the Sacher Torte. It is also recommended that you try the Grappa as well as the coffee – which is another speciality in the area. |
