Northern Ireland boasts a fascinating history and outstanding natural beauty – as well as some of the friendliest people in Europe. The capital, Belfast, has been home to some turbulent political problems in the twentieth century – and still bears the marks of this, in terms of some wonderful murals which are painted all around the town. It’s worth hiring a car during a visit here, as you can base in Belfast before heading off to some of the breathtaking countryside for a change of scene. This includes the Fermanagh Lakelands and the Causeway Coast. Some of the most interesting attractions include the birthplace of the Titanic and the Walled City of Derry. Some of the most interesting buildings date back to Norman times, and there is a lot to be explored. To add to the draw, other areas such as Fermanagh and Tyrone are also highly recommended, offering excellent examples of monastic sites and abbeys.
The Sperrins are the largest and least explored mountain range in Northern Ireland with dramatic landscapes and rivers. You can also check out the Giant’s Causeway which is along the Antrim coast. They are now considered a World Heritage Site. The region is easily accessible, by car and you will find this the ideal way to enjoy your holiday in Ireland to the maximum and see some stunning views of the surrounding scenery.
One highlight is the capital city of Belfast. It is widely known for St. Anne’s Cathedral, formerly which used to be called Belfast Cathedral. Built between 1899 and 1927 it has beautiful mosaic work in the ceiling. The Crown Liquor Saloon has survived very well over the years, and is a charming reminder of by-gone days. For foodies, St. George’s Mark is a treasure trove of delicious finds. |
