Located in the south west of Spain, Almeria was traditionally an agricultural centre but is now a bustling metropolis. Its dry and hot climate make it a great holiday destination, as does the abundance of particularly interesting religious buildings which reflect the town’s history. Of these, the nineteenth century cathedral of San Pedro, which was built on top of the ancient Arab mosque, is particularly interesting for visitors and gives an insight into the development of Almerian culture.
Aside from this abundance of historical buildings, visitors can also check the Nicolas Salmeron Park, which runs along the seashore; this provides for some particularly spectacular views of the marina and port. Hiring a car will also make travel to the nearby Sierra Nevada Nature Reserve particularly easy and as such, is highly recommended. The cuisine in Almeria is very well regarded throughout Spain; because of the grape production in the area, wine enthusiasts should be sure to sample some of the many types of wine on offer. Additionally, the seafood is particularly tantalizing to the palate. |
