An ancient town which was built in the late third century BC, Cartagena is an impressive example of Spanish ancient history merged with contemporary developments. It is easily accessible by reliable road routes serving the South East of Spain. Because of its mineral wealth and ideal location, it was historically a central base for the Romans during their time here and now serves as one of the major Naval bases for the Spanish Navy.
During the sixteenth century, because of the widespread upsurge in the Spanish economy, Cartegena underwent something of a revival. This has given the city its rich historical and artistic legacy which makes it fascinating for visitors; this includes some wonderful examples of Baroque and Neo Classical buildings you can see from wandering through the older parts of the city. Aside from this, the impressive beach La Manga Del Mar Menor is idyllic, and great for spending an afternoon. |
