The Cantabrian community of Spain is mostly all housed in the port city of Santander in the North East of the Country. With a population numbering around the two hundred thousand mark, Santander is a strong center for Catholicism in Spain with the city being the seat for the Roman Catholic Diocese. Tragically much of historical sites of Santander, dating back hundreds of years, were all destroyed in a huge fire that engulfed the city in 1941. This means that the city has been completely rebuilt and is relatively modern when compared to other Spanish cities. Sadly Santander is completely devoid of any examples of Spanish culture that so typify the other major cities.
As a large port, Santander’s economy is based more towards industry and agriculture, especially the distribution of agricultural products. This does not mean that there is nothing much to do for tourists, and the climate of the city is much easier to live with than some of the hotter and considerably more humid spots further south on the coast. Santander has long been a popular spot for Spanish holidaymakers as well as those from northern Europe and especially Scandinavia who are looking for lese torrid weather as well as entertainment in a more laid back manner. Surfers have recently discovered Santander with the city’s Sardine to beach being a particular attraction.
The sophisticated appeal of Santander’ s night life drawn mostly from the south of France, which is only a short car journey away, appeals to the mature and cultured section of the population. Fine restaurants serving gourmet food, cocktail bars and night clubs offering live entertainment are to be readily found. Santander is one city in Spain where the Casino is popular, not just as a place to wager but also to met friends and enjoys a good meal. There are many interesting places to visit up and down the coast from Santander, and the best way to take advantage of them all is by car.
There are several pick up areas around the city with discounts are on offer for rentals of three days and over. Car Hire in Santander comes as a ‘fully inclusive’ package which includes unlimited mileage, collision damage waiver, passenger indemnity insurance and cover for third party, fire and theft - and usually insurance excess. To rent a car anywhere in Spain, you must show a full driver's licence and a credit card in the driver’s name. Cars are usually rented to customers between the ages of 21 to 70 years. Hiring a car is a great idea if you want to use Santander as your base for a three day minimum travel experience around the greater region. |
