One of the major cities in Spain, Seville is regarded as being the financial and cultural center for the south of the country. Seville is also the capital of the Andalucian region. Sitting on the shores of the Guadalquivir River, Seville is largely and industrial city and home to almost three quarters of a million occupants in the city itself and with more than one and a half million within the metropolitan area, making it the fourth largest population center in all of Spain.
More than anything, Seville is a city of culture and throughout the year a series of festivals are held there. These festivals attract visitors from all around the country as well as other parts of Europe to taste the traditional flavor of Spanish culture dating back several centuries. The Holy Week will see hundreds of thousands flock to the city to view or even take part in one of the processions that goes on all through the event. The annual fair or “Ferria” which takes place around two weeks later is a far more joyous and colorful affair. Local companies, unions and city organisations set up their own marquees or hospitality tents, the wine flows like water, and the sound of the flamenco fills the air.
The history of the south of Spain is heavily influenced by Moorish culture as well as that of Gothic times. The cathedral in Seville is famous for not only for being the site of the tomb of Christopher Columbus but also for having the largest floor space of any place of worship throughout the world. La Giralda, a huge tower dating back to the thirteenth century provides some pretty sensational views of the city for those who have the strength to climb the many hundreds of steps to reach the top. A popular visitor’s spot is the palace at Alcázar, where King Alfonso and his descendant Queen Isabella ruled Spain and indeed the entire Iberian Peninsula from the palace, which is believed was built in the ninth century. There is much to see and do for the visitor to Seville, which today has evolved to be a modern European city. The mixture of the old and new is everywhere, yet does not detract from the excellent shopping, first class restaurants and bars and live entertainment that goes on every night and is enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike. The Andalalusion region offers a host of points to visit and study and well worth investing some time when visiting the city.
There are several pick up areas around the city with discounts are on offer for rentals of three days and over. Car Hire in Seville comes as a ‘fully inclusive’ package which includes unlimited mileage, collision damage waiver, passenger indemnity insurance and cover for third party, fire and theft - and usually insurance excess. To rent a car anywhere in Spain you must show a full driver's licence and a credit card in the driver’s name. Cars are usually rented to customers between the ages of 21 to 70 years. Hiring a car is a great idea if you want to use Seville as your base for a three day minimum travel experience around the greater region. |
