Airolo is situated on the south foothills of the Gotthard Pass, which is the ideal driving route between the Leventina Valley and Bisaca. A municipality the Canton of Ticino, it boasts sumptuous year-round views and is popular with holiday makers for hiking in particular. Historically, it has been a strong favourite among local Swiss as a holiday destination, offering sumptuous scenic views as well as luxurious accommodation and high-end restaurants. It is also home to its share of major historical sites. From the Hospice Complex by the St. Gotthard Pass to the prehistorical settlements in the surrounding areas, this area provides a fascinating insight into ancient Swiss culture.
Come winter, the area is heavily populated by tourists anxious to take advantage of the great conditions for skiing and snowboarding. The two major areas to look out for are Pescium and Luina, which together combine to make the biggest resort in the whole Ticino region. Summer is the opportune time for exploring the mountain routes where you can also discover further historical places of interest such as the huts of Cristallina, Corno Gries and Cadagno.
