Situated close to Zurich and within easy driving access of the capital, Bachenbuelach is surprisingly one of Switzerland’s less visited tourist destinations that is sure to delight visitors of all ages. From the Convent of St. Gall, which is a fantastic example of Carolingian architecture and one of the most important buildings in Europe. The attached library is one of the oldest in the world and is rich in heritage, including manuscripts from ancient times written on parchment.
Another recommendation is ‘Le Locle’, or the Watchmaking Town Planning site close to Bachenbuelach. An old watch-making factory dating from the nineteenth century, the planning of the building reflects the watchmakers’ history and is a fascinating place to visit for tourists both young and old. The site presents outstanding examples of mono-industrial manufacturing-towns that are well preserved and still active. The urban planning of both towns has accommodated the transition from the artisanal production of a cottage industry to the more concentrated factory production of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Additionally pretty sites include the churches of St. Mary and St. Marcus amongst others, all of which were built between the ninth and eleventh centuries and give a wonderful insight into the development of the Swiss nation. With so much to see and do, Bauchenbuelach is one of the most interesting and unspoilt towns for visitors to Switzerland from all backgrounds and ages. |
