Bellinzona is arguably Switzerland’s most Italy-influenced town and has a gorgeous backdrop of outstanding scenery particularly prevalent in the fortifications, castles and views of Ticino on offer. It was historically strategically positioned where the valley narrows between the Alpine passes of St. Gotthard and San Benardino and largely acts as a gateway for those travelling from the North to the South – all of which is through some truly exceptional scenery that makes it the perfect stop on a driving holiday.
With its delightful and historical streets buildings, including the Italian-style theatre, as well as town houses, it is both charming and mysterious. Must visit historical attractions include the Castelgrande, Castello di Montebello and Castello di Sasso Corbaro. The Teatro Sociale, which was inspired by La Scala in Milan and designed in typical neo-Classical Italian style, is the only theatre in Switzerland from the nineteenth century that is still preserved and one of the most beautiful in the whole country.
Food culture is also particularly important here, with some exceptional delis, restaurants and markets offering the best of the Swiss countryside all year round. Given its position as a defense of the Alps, driving in the area is a pure pleasure with such a rich history that you can easily spend a week or more in the town |
