Brig Glis officially comes under the district of Brig in the Canton of Valais in Switzerland. A picturesque town in itself, it is situated at the bottom of the Simplon Pass and bears a strong Italian influence in both the architecture and attitude of the locals. Despite this, the main language spoken here is German, which is a unique trait of this part of Switzerland. The Alp summits dotting the town are some of the prettiest in the country, and will provide you with ample choice for long summer drives.
Some of the most famous buildings in the town include the Ursuline Convent, the Jesuits’ College and the Stockalper Palace – all of which give a nod to the colourful nature of Switzerland’s past. Given the close proximity of the Rhone River, the region becomes icy during the winter time and as such is inundated with winter athletes in search of their fix of danger. During the summer, however, the temperatures are intensely strong.
The carriage road across the Simplon Pass was opened in the early nineteenth century and is one of the most exciting in the country, providing a central point for communication for Brig and the rest of Switzerland. With such well-maintained roads, it is thus easy to reach Brig by car and negotiate the surrounding area. |
