As far back at the thirteenth century, pilgrims would journey to the area to take advantage of the springs, and by the seventeenth century the earliest baroque bathhouse had been built below the Benedictine Monastery in Pfafers. From the nineteenth century, luxury hotels were built so that more tourists could easily enjoy the exceptional quality of the waters in the area including Russian nobility.
