With its wide rand of historical sites, as well as modern attractions, Bern – or the ‘city of fountains’ as it is unofficially known - has something for everyone. Amongst them, some of the best for visitors are Bear Park, the Federal Square, and the River Aare – all of which combine to make Bern an exciting place for either short or long-term breaks. Outwith the city itself is the Canton of Bern, which provides for some excellent roads for travelling and driving holidays all year round.
With former inhabitants including Paul Klee, who has a centre dedicated to him here, its little wonder that Bern is one of Switzerland’s best-regarded places of cultural and artistic interest. Of the historical places of interest, the Cathedral of Bern is one of the most impressive examples of Late Gothic architecture in the whole city, and a perfect day stop might include viewing this and also the Botanic Gardens which are located in the heart of the city and cover over two hectares with their lush offerings. The Elfenau Estate is another of Bern’s top attractions, as is the oldest church in the city, the ‘French Church’. Be sure to check out The Granary, which is regarded as one of Bern’s best examples of Baroque architecture. |
