Perhaps best known as the birthplace of Corbusier, La Chaux de fonds is particularly well-known for its watch-making industry and is even home to the International Watch Museum – just one of the many attractions on offer in the city. The city itself was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, and it’s easy to see why with its unique design and structure. As Switzerland’s highest located city, it is also afforded delightful views of the surrounding countryside. While easily negotiable on foot or by one of the small trains that runs the length of the city, car driving here is a pleasure and will be extremely convenient throughout your stay. Given its strong cultural heritage, there are also plenty of galleries for art-lovers including Art nouveau à La Chaux-de-Fonds, Bradrie, Club 44.
Some of the main diversions for tourists include skiing and snowboarding, and particularly good places to stop for any prolonged period of time are the small villages of Le Locle and La Brevine – although be warned, the average temperatures her remain very low. The mountain scenery is also a great place to hike and enjoy other outdoor activities during the summer months. |
