The town of Sierre lies in the French-German region of southwestern Switzerland southeast of Lausanne. Settled since the Bronze Age, a number of impressive archaeological sites on nearby Gerunden Hill have produced a variety of ancient objects, including a stone ax, other weapons and jewelry. In addition, Roman-era jars, coins and jewelry can be traced back to the Iron Age, while visiting the Roman ruins that can be found throughout the area makes for a fun day trip. Many visitors opt to reserve a rental car in order to enjoy an extra level of freedom while traveling in and around Sierre. In nearby Grands-Prés, there is a 5th century BC Late Iron Age fire pit, while the churches of Sainte-Croix, Muraz, Glarey and Bernunes, which are located throughout the region, all provide a rare glimpse into ancient history. Wine connoisseurs will also enjoy visiting Sierre, which is home to the local wine museum Musée Valaisan de la Vigne et du Vin |
