The largely German-speaking city of St. Gallen lies slightly northeast of Zurich in northeastern Switzerland and is named after an Irish monk who stayed here for his hermitage in the 6th century. Later, a Benedictine monastery was founded here and a library was added in the 9th century that can still be visited today. It was designated a World Cultural Heritage site in the early 1980s in honor of the abbey's historical role as a center of learning for the region. St. Gallen is also known throughout the world as a center for producing fine linen and exquisite embroidery, while many artists have also called the region home over the years. Many visitors choose to reserve a rental car to provide autonomous transportation while in St. Gallen, which boasts adequate downtown parking in the Migros shopping center garage. Keep in mind that the old town center is best explored by foot, while the many museums located in the area are sure to provide countless hours of entertainment. |
