The town of Stein am Rhein is situated in north-central Switzerland northeast of Zurich and is home to a beautifully preserved old town center that dates back to medieval times. Here, visitors can walk along by the ancient city wall and can experience the town’s original street plan while taking in the colorful frescoes on the many medieval structures. The old town portion of Stein am Rhein has been pedestrianised to protect its integrity and the safety of visitors, but consider reserving a rental car for your other travels while visiting the area. Inhabited since the first century, Stein am Rhein has received the prestigious Wakker Prize for its efforts to preserve its stunning architectural heritage, which includes a number of structures that are listed as Swiss Heritage Sites of National Significance. Three churches are included on this list, as are the Schloss-Hohenklingen castle, the town hall and the city walls |
