Nestled in the north-central corner of Switzerland around 30 kilometers northeast of Zurich, the city of Winterthur is the sixth largest in the entire country and is known as Winti among the locals. The city lies close to both Germany and Italy, with major motorways connecting it to Geneva, Kreuzlingen and Turbenthal, making this an excellent base from which travelers can explore the region by rental car.
Settled since the Roman era, Winterthur boasts a number of structures that date back to 600-700 CE in its old town center, as well as an ancient moat and several protective towers. Also of note, the 12th century Church of St. Laurenz can be found here, and it is home to Albanfest, which is held each June and is the country’s largest annual festival held in a historic town center. The city is also popular among tourists for its many museums, including the Villa Flora, the Fotomuseum Winterthur, the Technorama, The Winterthur Museum of Art and the Oskar Reinhar Collection’s Am Römerholz and Am Stadtgarten |
