The German-speaking villages of Zermatt and Täesch are situated just a few miles apart in south-central Switzerland to the south of Berne, just over 10 kilometers from the border of Italy. The villages lie at the end of the Mattertal and are situated near some of Switzerland’s highest mountain peaks, making this region a popular destination for skiers and mountaineers alike from around the world, thanks in large to its proximity to the imposing Matterhorn. This peak was not conquered until 1865 and only 3 of the 7 climbers made the trip back down the mountain.
While visiting, consider reserving a rental car to make getting around even easier, and be sure to check out the Matterhorn Museum, as well as the ancient petroglyphs and prehistoric grinding stone at Hubelwäng. While both Zermatt and Täsch are popular during the winter months for obvious reasons, it is important to note that the region is also busy during the summer due to its excellent hiking and stunning natural beauty. |
