Situated almost directly south of Zurich in central Switzerland, the German-speaking city of Zug has been settled since the 12th century and its name, which stems from Middle Ages fishing vocabulary, refers to its humble origins as a fishing village. The area has actually been settled since the Paleolithic period, however, as evidenced by the archaeological remains of more than 40 settlements that have been discovered along the shores of nearby Lake Zug during modern times.
Today, the shores of the lake near the city have been nicely developed to include a promenade, with stunning views of the nearby mountain peaks of the Bernese Oberland. While visiting, be sure to reserve a rental car for easy transportation, and don’t forget to check out the historic old town center, as well as the striking church of St. Oswald and the town hall-turned museum, which both date back to the 15th century |
